Cynthia writes:

Need an assist: searching for the family of Henry Coates and his wife Louise (Kathleen) Wyn Coates in Providence, Fairfax, VA. Louise was the step-daughter of Griffith Barnes married to Susie. The trail drops off there, she was born around 1900, and I have not been able to get her Louise's mother's maiden or birthfather's info.

Lena Singleton Chambliss, married to Lewis Chambliss 29 Dec 1896, found in Monroe GA court of ordinary record. Searching for a trace of either/both family any further back. Lena's sibs: Julia, Wallene, Charles...

Stuck and can't find Lena's folks or whatever happened to Lewis. There is a nickname for Lewis: Bose or Boise. I have searched many military records and even prison records for the Brantley and Monroe Counties in GA.

Help!! I am losing steam here.

Thanks more than you know.

Cynthia
Thanks.

Cynthia, thank you so much for your request. After a quick search of census and military records here is what I have found.

In the 1870 Monroe County GA census is the following:

Lucy Chambliss, Martha, Julia, Onis, Zack and Amanda.

In the 1880 Census for Monroe County GA listed are:
Lucy Chambliss widow age 35 b. GA, black
Martha daughter age 8 b. GA
John son age 6 b. GA
Lewis son age 3 b. GA

I did find a Lucy Chambliss who died in Monroe County GA on August 14, 1925. I strongly suggest you send away to obtain this death record, it can contain some very important information for you. You had stated that you could find no trace of Lewis, he is on the 1880 census as shown above.

Also, I did find a Draft Registration Card for Charles Singleton in Monroe County GA, listed as his wife is Josie Singleton and it states his birth as August 6, 1884. This is most likely the Charles that you could not find and you may want to order this record as well. Now onto Henry Coates.

Henry S. Caotes is listed in both the 1880 and 1910 Census records for Providence, Fairfax VA. This Henry could very well be the father of the Henry you are inquiring about. Henry S. Coates born in 1873 in VA, he is listed as age 5 in 1880 and as age 36 in the 1910 census.

In the 1930 Census for Providence, Fairfax Va we have:
Henry Coates b. 1898 in VA, parents b.VA
Louise wife age 29 b. VA, parents b. VA
James W son age 12 b. VA
Margaret daughter age 10 b. VA
Dorothy V. daughter age 9 b. VA
John C. son age 7 b. VA
Lawrence S. son age 9 months b. VA
Lowin . son age 2 months b. VA

I hope this information will be of some use to you. Please don't hesitate to contact me for further assistance. Good Luck to you!
Christine
